Paul Nelson's XFL session interview Guitar One Magazine Interview by Chris Obyrne
I do a lot of session work in between touring and recording, and received a call requesting that
I lay down 12 loops for the opening season of the WWF's new football league (XFL). Turns out these
loops were to be all original and completed the following day for the next weeks airing on NBC (I
hear their cheerleaders will be doing their thing to the tunes). Their producer requested balls to
the wall guitar and I did my best to deliver. For recording I used a Lines 6 flextone head straight
to the board and also a TS-808 and a couple of fresh packs of Ernie Ball Slinky's. All the effects
were through the board during mixdown. The session consisted of creating mini songs on the spot,
recording bass, drums and keys tracks first, next laying down guitar rhythm parts doubling them (my bad)!
Then creating lead guitar hooks on top followed by various guitar fills, all to 12 completely different
grooves at the same time in keeping with the well known raw edgy powerful WWF sound. All in all it was
a great time for a great organization! |
