For this release, Johnny has again paired with his long-time producer Dick Shurman (Robert Cray, Albert Collins, Roy Buchanan), as well as Tom Hambridge (Susan Tedeschi, George Thorogood). Backing him is his road-tested touring band of ace harmonica man James Montgomery, bassist Scott Spray and drummer Wayne June, along with guitarist Paul Nelson with guest appearances by such friends as keyboardist Reese Wynans (from Stevie Ray Vaughan's celebrated backing group Double Trouble) among others. I'm A Bluesman is Johnny's first new collection in nearly eight years. It was a question of finding the time and the right material, he says, plus a long recuperation from hip surgery. "Johnny is a real hero to me, and I wanted to do a song about his life. I know how Johnny talks, how he phrases things, and I wanted to capture his feelings. It's about who he is, what he represents to other musicians and what he's accomplished. I'm really proud that when he first heard the song he said I'd gotten it right." "It's my favorite song" Johnny vouches Nelson also provides some great guitar work on the song and on the other tracks as well. Johnny Winter, Paul Nelson, Wayne June and James Montgomery performed a straight ahead no bars held Blues show. Johnny Winter and his band delivered a crystal clean show, from song number one until the end of their stage set, Johnny astounded the audience with his music man 4x10 cabinet and his fender twin reverb 2x12 combo amplifier sound and clean picked riffs, Johnny's howlin blue notes astounded the audience with his perfectly executed finger magic. Johnny Winter finalized the set as he performed his slide guitar magic style pickin. What a ride. In addition to a great stage show by Johnny Winter and his band, Johnny was joined in one of the fabulously outfitted back stage rooms after the show by his brother Edgar Winter, Dan Ackroyd, band members, and fans alike. Backstage photos were taken, images weren't mistaken, especially the permanent picture of Mr. Johnny Winter finalizing his performance as he personally cleaned his beautiful firebird backstage, and put her to rest in her case. Johnny has chosen to record the song "Shakedown" co-written by Paul Nelson and Scott Spray (Edgar Winter group). Paul was invited by Johnny to contribute guitar tracks on the song as well as recently adding two more songs co - written by Paul and Scott, all of which will appear on this release due out in 2003.
